Poll: 23 Percent of Americans Don't Know Country US Declared Independence From



Nearly one in four Americans don’t know which country the U.S. declared its independence from, a NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist Poll revealed.


A total of 77 percent correctly identified Great Britain as the country from which American declared it independence, while 23 percent did know or identified the wrong country.

“Thirteen other counties get tabbed as the country from which the United States gained its independence,” Dr. Lee M. Miringoff, director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion.

“A scattering of individuals mention France, Mexico, and Federal Republic of Germany among the longer list of states.

“At least one person surveyed mentioned Afghanistan, Brazil, Canada, China, Columbia, Denmark, Italy, Japan, Panama, or Russia.”
